ذكر الإمام السيوطيّ في مستهل خطبة الكتاب الغرض من تأليفه فقال: (( فهذا تأريخ لطيف، ترجمت فيه الخلفاء أمراء المؤمنين القائمين بأمر الأمة؛ من عهد أبي بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه إلى عهدنا هذا، على ترتيب زمانـهم الأول فالأول، وذكرت في ترجمة كل منهم: ما وقع في أيامه من الحوادث المستغربة، ومن كان في أيامه من أئمة الدين وأعلام الأمة)).
ثم ذكر بعد ذلك الأمور التي دعته إلى تأليف هذا الكتاب، والمنهج الذي سكله في تأليفه.
